Business problems
suck. But know what’s worse?

Inner demons.

I’m talking about the self-sabotaging habits that creep up just when you’re getting traction…

Or those low energy days when you get up from your desk and wonder “what the heck did I even do today?”…

Or when you wake up to a boatload of head funk or brain fog...

It sucks.

And the reality is:

As the founder and captain of your ship, you’re not allowed to have a bad day.

You always have to be “on”.

Fortunately, over the years, I’ve found 3 practical steps anyone can take to rip negative pathways out at the roots.

And fill that headspace with high-quality thoughts that push you forward, energize you, and give you unbreakable confidence.

Sounds good?

Check out how to do it in this week’s GSS episode.

In this episode, I want to share with you:

1. How to remove toxic thoughts and imposter syndrome with one simple shift in habits...

2. The concept of “slaying the dragon vs avoiding it” (and why it’s often better to avoid the dragon)...

3. My thoughts on info-consumption and how it could change your life for better or worse…

4. How to tie an unbreakable knot between your vision + goals and your current reality to boost your energy to new heights...

5. The one habit that has changed my life and purges me daily of negative thinking/emotions…

It’s a long and tough road being a founder.

But the good news is this:

The benefits of the “thought habits” I’m going to share with you today compound. Fast.

At first, you’ll feel a little less stressed and anxious…

But fast forward a little, and if you stay consistent, you might just wake up a completely different person pumped full of life, clarity, and positivity.

...EVEN when the world is throwing lemons at you.

Enjoy the video and let me know your biggest takeaway in the comments!

20 years ago, the words “Artificial Intelligence” were more common in Hollywood than in Silicon Valley.

A.I. made for great sci-fi movies… but not for good software.

At best, it was a dream of what the future may be.

But now, in 2021, artificial intelligence is the hottest new tech trend.

Entrepreneurs are building software that can crunch data, predict outcomes and generate results with minimal human input.

When the ONLY thing that matters is providing massive value to your customers, then A.I. can be the cutting edge technology that leaves your competitors for dead.

Imagine having an army of robot employees.

I mean…

It SOUNDS great.

But is there a catch?

Let’s hear from Martin Cloake, the CEO at Raven.ai, a software company using artificial intelligence to optimize manufacturing processes.

In this week’s GSS Expert Interview, Martin breaks down how Raven uses A.I. for growth, and covers a few other things too related to AI.

Like...

- Why every A.I. formula needs to account for human behaviour

- Why it’s important to ask a SMALL number of questions

- How to minimize time waste in ANY production

- Interpreting basic data to generate clear actions

- Why data without action = USELESS

- How selling blinds in a store helped Martin’s engineering

- Why every employee needs to know how to persuade

- How to use A.I. to improve SaaS sales calls

Martin is a smart guy, there’s no doubt about it. But what I love about our interview is that he takes these high-level concepts and makes them SUPER simple to understand.

That’s essential to A.I.

The tech that drives AI can be complex… but the actionable insights need to be simple enough for an absent-minded human to get right every time.

As an example of Raven.ai’s success, they helped the Sanofi biopharma facility find $2.4M in additional factory output, even with a $230K reduction in costs.

Yeah, that’s providing massive value on the back of some smart A.I. technology.

Fire up the episode here and I can guarantee you’re going to learn more about where the future is heading.

Download: Online Group Builder™ - How To Build A Lead-Generating Online Group In Less Than 10 Minutes A Day - https://bit.ly/3sHKg71

--

Back in 2020, I decided to build a SaaS pond...

...an online group where SaaS founders could hang out, connect with each other, and gain massive value…

All for free.

But before I started the group, I had a few concerns...

“Would I have to go live all the time?”

“How would I keep up with engagement?”

“Will the people in the group create value without me prompting them to?”

And the biggest concern was…

“What if this group fails and ends up a half-baked wasteland for everyone else online to see?”

If you’ve also had these concerns, I got your back in this week’s episode of the Growth Stacking Show.

Here’s how to build an online group where you can fish for ideal customers to your heart's content.

In this week’s episode, we’ll go over the following strategies:

- How to start your group on the right foot (how to name your group, brand it, and how to get people through the door)...

- A mind-blowing strategy I learned from my coach Taki for getting potential buyers to automatically raise their hand (without you saying ANYTHING)...

- A smooth tactic to start conversations with group members about your services without coming across as pitchy or salesy...

- How to prepare content so you get it all done in a fraction of the time (I do this for all my content so it doesn’t take time away from my other priorities)...

- When’s the right time to go fishing in your pond for new opportunities and how to drop strategic hooks...

Plus a ton of other cool stuff.

Using the strategies I’m about to share with you, we quickly grew our SaaS group from 100 founders to over 3000!

And although there’s no cost to join…

It creates opportunities left right and center for us to introduce our coaching services.

It’s like a private pond I get to go fishing at every week for perfect-fit clients.

And know what?

It can work for your SaaS too.

Online groups are a MASSIVE lead gen opportunity for SaaS businesses.

Be sure to watch this episode from start to finish, and discover how to leverage online groups to build a lead pumping machine.

(Also don’t forget to leave a comment on your #1 takeaway.)

Let’s go.

If growing your SaaS means selling to Enterprise clients, then...

I feel your pain.

When you have enterprise clients, you can’t just build a simple sales funnel then kick back and relax…

An enterprise contract for $10K to $20K is a little more involved than an advert >> sales page >> checkout...

You’re depending on demos, sales calls, and having a sales team that connects with customers BEFORE even getting on a sales call.

And that’s the #1 problem that comes with these kinds of contracts…

That unending sales cycle...

The longer it takes from the first touchpoint to signing the contract, the higher the salaries get, and the higher your acquisition costs become.

Really, if you have enterprise clients, shortening your sales cycle could be the difference between a wildly successful business and going down the tubes...

So let’s talk enterprise client strategies...

In this weeks’ video, I’ll show you 5 strategic steps to shorten the sales cycle for enterprise clients.

In this video, you’ll find out:

- How to audit and TRULY understand your own processes

- How to identify the perfect customer

- The #1 trap of marketing automation that will ruin your sales

- How to get a client to reveal their buying patterns

- Where to inject marketing levers into your sales process

I love enterprise-level SaaS.

Sure, getting a client to sign on is a challenge when the price tag is high.

But a high ACV (annual contract value) means it only takes a few clients to add extra zeros to your ARR.

A well-optimized enterprise SaaS can grow from a proof of concept to millions of profit in just months.

But to do that means shortening your sales cycles.

Hope you find this video useful, and as always, I’d love to hear from you.

Leave a comment to let me know if you think this strategy will work for you.

Have you created a limited-time offer before?

Black Friday sale? Pre-selling your product? An end of year campaign?

Although it sounds like a great idea, be warned...

It’s a double-edged sword.

Done right, a limited-time offer is a massive cash injection into your business that can sustain your dev team without the need for investors.

But cut the wrong way, and you’ll BLEED revenue until your balance sheet is dyed red.

I’ve seen SaaS founders run generous limited-time offers…

...only to have those offers come back to haunt them with the wrong customers, a clogged-up support, and no long-term value generated for their business.

Even when at first everything looked awesome!

So in my latest video, I’ll talk you through HOW to create a limited-time offer the right way.

If you get this right, it could explode growth for your business, activate those on-the-fence buyers, and lower your CAC, and do all this without any downsides or negative kickbacks.

Let’s go.

The 5 key points I’m digging into for assembling a rock-solid limited-time offer are:

- Know your C.O.G.S.

- Pay more, not less

- Bundle the OUTCOME

- R&D (No- not research and development…)

- Promote the deal

Like everything I talk about, success is not accidental - it’s strategic.

I want to show you that time-limited offers are an excellent idea, provided you assemble them correctly.

What’s your experience?

Have you made an offer in the past that still haunts you today? Or do you feel like you nailed it?

Drop me a comment on the video, I’d love to share war stories.

Real talk:

If you can’t fix a problem in your business in 6 - 8 weeks…

There’s something wrong with how you’re doing it.

I have a system, a 100% repeatable step-by-step strategy, that FLATTENS problems in any business.

“Big call, Dan. Where’s the proof?”

Here it is.

You see, I HAD to develop this strategy.

Because every business I built had its problems, as I’m sure yours does too.

So when I faced problems and we solved them, I worked with my team to figure out what we did that worked.

We mapped it out and tried it on the next problem, and the next.

What emerged was a strategy that I’ve been sharing for years now.

I have a client that recently followed this strategy, step by step, and within 2 months they increased their ROAS by 300%!

Did they get lucky? Learn magic?

No. They followed the process I’m about to share with you in this weeks video.

Now, whenever red flags are raised in your business, rather than screaming in panic and tearing your hair out…

You’ll have a playbook you can turn to, to shut that problem DOWN.

And get back to scaling your business.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the video. Drop me a comment.

“Why are sales dropping?”, “What do we prioritize next?”, “Should we pivot?”

There is power in a question.

And as a SaaS founder or CEO, you can’t go chasing answers to the wrong questions.

It’s a wild goose chase (and a waste of your time).

So your ability to ask the RIGHT questions will result in growth for your business.

And I have some bad news...

Most founders are asking a lot of “wrong questions” without even knowing it.

I was one of them...

That’s why today, I’m going to show you how to make a powerful mental pivot, just by changing the question you ask.

I call it the “Who, Not How” strategy.

This simple strategy allowed me to go from a burnt-out founder living in Silicon Valley in 2008, scratching my head wondering what I wanted to do…

...to building and exiting a company only 2.5 years later for a multi-million dollar payout.

All because I used the “Who, Not How” strategy.

Let me show you how it works.

This one simple strategy is going to help you to:

- Ask questions that will bring your future aspirations forward

- Scale faster than your competitors

- Build a talented AND loyal team

- Keep your focus sharp

- Take the pressure and focus off of you

Can you guess how this strategy works yet?

I started 5 tech companies, successfully exited 3 of them, and I owe much of my success to being strict with this strategy.

You don’t want this… you NEED this.

The “Who, Not How” Strategy of Growth [Video]

Over the last 23 years, I’ve started 5 SaaS businesses and successfully exited 3 of them, making me a millionaire at 27 years old.

I could have retired and never worked another day in my life...

But my 2 boys, Max and Noah, changed that.

When I became a father, my view of the world was immediately different.

I didn’t want to retire.

I wanted to make an impact, to live a life that has meaning by sharing and helping others, to set an example for my kids.

So 5 years ago, I came out from the shadows and started my personal authority brand.

Since I launched DanMartell.com, I’ve published a video on my YouTube channel every single Monday for 5 years.

I have never, ever, ever missed a Monday.

Today I have over 1 million followers across my social accounts and was recently named the #1 SaaS coach in the WORLD.

I could never have achieved that without first building a personal brand… and it was wildly different from starting a SaaS.

If you’ve ever wanted to build authority in your niche, impact more lives and get your product into more hands…

Then building a personal brand with your face and name front-and-center might just be the way.

This is my advice on how to do it, generated from thousands of hours of hard work!

I’ll group the key points of this video into 3 main steps:

1. Education Based Marketing

2. Elite Edification

3. Powerful Platform

Authority branding and a social following are NOT the same thing. Don’t fall into that trap and waste 1000s of hours building a brand you don’t own.

Great authority branding never relies on a single social channel…

If Zuckerberg shut down Facebook tomorrow, I’d be fine. If Google closed YouTube, well- I’d be heartbroken but my social accounts and email accounts would save my fall.

A well-made authority brand doesn’t rise to the top on a wave of one social account and get dumped by the next.

It’s much more stable than that.

So if you’re gearing up to put your face and your name out there…

Don’t even START until you’ve watched through this video.

As always, I’m reading the comments. So let me know what you think by dropping a comment.

As a 3x successful business-owner and founder, my biggest fears about having kids were:

  1. I would be an absent father

  2. I would accidentally raise entitled kids

Those two thoughts made me sweat.

I was terrified.

I was good at business... but what about being a good father?

What if I messed it up?

I thought maybe my obsessive drive meant I shouldn’t ever have children.

Kids aren’t something you can quit if it goes wrong.

So when my wife Renée fell pregnant, it lit a burning need in me to get good at the one thing I felt afraid of.

I NEEDED to be an authentic and present father for my children. I had to get good at this.

I hired the best mentors, coaches and parenting experts, I took the classes, read the books…

I trained. Hard.

And I’m not perfect. Many of my lessons weren’t taught to me from a book, they were learned from mistakes.

But today I’d like to share a new video with the most valuable lessons I can offer you.

Here is how to raise successful kids to be winners.

My kids are the biggest blessing that’s ever happened to me.

I wasn’t expecting it… I was so afraid about not giving them the right life that I never stopped to think about how much love and light they would bring into mine

When Renée got pregnant, we were living in San Francisco and I had just closed a round of $1.6M in funding for my company Clarity.

3 months after the birth of our first son we found out we were having another.

Max and Noah are 11 months apart, and I LOVE my boys with all my heart.

That’s why this video is so important to me.

I’m proud to say I overcame my fears and I am 100% a family man AND an entrepreneur at the same time.

But the only way I got there was by truly living the lessons I discovered and shared in today’s video.

Check it out and drop a comment with your best parenting advice. We all could use it.

I’m super pumped.

Why?

The other day, my life-long buddy Martin asked me:

“Uh, Dan… what exactly is a SaaS?

I think he was a bit embarrassed to ask.

He knows I’m a SaaS coach and that I’ve been building companies in this business model for 23 years, but he never really understood what that meant.

I began raving about why I freakin’ LOVE the SaaS business model.

...how it’s getting 40% year-on-year growth.

...why valuations are 5x to 10x top-line revenue (while other businesses get as low as 0.7x)

...how the SaaS model makes an average 87% gross margins.

I mean, these are the facts that make any entrepreneur’s jaw drop!

SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) is easily the hottest business model in the 21st century with massive opportunities for growth.

So, for Martin (and anyone else scratching their head), I’m SO PUMPED to show you this new video where I share my love and passion for SaaS.

If you’ve ever been curious about what exactly I do, this video will help.

I coach SaaS founders, the people that start these software companies and turn their ideas into living, breathing businesses.

I help them steer clear of the mistakes that send a SaaS startup to the graveyard…

So they can benefit from this booming, lucrative industry...

And so they are rewarded for their hard work...

As someone that spends every day optimizing this business model, I made this video to share what I love about this industry to anyone in it or outside of it.

It’s like standing at the peak of a mountain and admiring the view.

We are in a fascinating industry.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it.

Do millionaires think differently about money?

Absolutely.

You don’t build a wealthy life by accident.

And no, I’m not talking about trust fund babies or millionaires that inherited wealth.

They don’t count.

I’m talking about people that grew their net worth with their own hard work.

That kind of success doesn’t come about by chance. And to build a life like that, you’ve got to do an audit on your money beliefs.

If you don’t...harmful beliefs can creep up and poke holes in your financial success when you least expect it.

I’m telling you this because I’ve seen it too many times.

Incredibly capable people, great vision, full of talent. But they’ve got the wrong beliefs and they sabotage their own potential.

I used to be like that too.

As soon as I started doing things right, I’d pull myself back down.

I blamed my circumstances… it was always something or someone else that prevented me from finding success.

...

It took rehab, two failed companies, and a heck of a lot of pain to realize…

It was me.

I had to change.

When I finally took ownership for my life and started to rethink my beliefs around money and success, that’s when things changed… fast.

In today’s video, I want to blow the lid wide open on the beliefs that turned my life around.

And I’m convinced they’re the key to skyrocketing you past your wealth goals to heights you’ve never even dreamed of.

Here’s my exposé on the money beliefs of the wealthy.

In this video, I’m going to share with you the 5 most important strategies to help you rewire your money beliefs:

- What your #1 investment must be

- How to HAVE money (starting with the $1000 cash rule)

- The bad opportunities that will capsize your cash flow

- Why the slow + compound strategy = better than stupid get rich quick schemes

- The ‘ownership problem’ you must rectify ASAP

- The biggest false belief that holds the non-wealthy back

Even if you think you’ve already got your head screwed on right, all it takes is one of these limiting beliefs to creep in and it will hinder your capacity for wealth.

You must work on yourself.

Your mind.

Your beliefs.

And on the flip side, just think…

If you changed the way you think about money today, you’ll make different decisions tomorrow.

And the next day. And the next.

Add them together and you’ll have a radically different life 3 years from now. This is why I need you to take 10 minutes out of your day, right now, and watch this video.

Agree? Disagree? Click the link, and drop me a comment, I’m listening.

I love doing hard things,

I learned early in life that the more difficult a challenge, the more rewarding.

So, call me crazy, but I deliberately seek out difficult challenges.

My family motto is “We do hard things”...

And last year, I did one of the most crazy challenges yet.

I did #75Hard.

It’s a 75-day challenge with ZERO excuses.

2 workouts per day, a strict diet, a gallon of water per day…

And if you slip up even once…

...you go back to day 1.

NO EXCUSES.

You think you’re training your body...

But really, 75 Hard is like an Ironman for the mind. You’re developing mental toughness.

And going through that challenge was eye-opening for me!

Now, I’m not going to tell you to join 75 Hard (even though you should!)

But I do want to share with you 5 massive mental shifts that hit me like a ton-of-bricks to the face while in the challenge.

Each one of them will stick with me forever because they’re worth 10x more than the discomfort I faced during the challenge.

I get it...

Physical challenges like this can seem unrelated to the growth of your SaaS.

But as an entrepreneur, a CEO, and a founder - I believe training your mind is where success starts.

Keep your mind sharp. Keep it trained.

It’s up to you to make good decisions even when they’re difficult and lead your company the best you can.

Can you really do that from a place of complacency?

Watch the video and leave a comment telling me which of the 5 mental shifts you know you need the most.

Today I want to share with you how to build an EPIC marriage and avoid divorce.

But wait a second--

How the heck am I qualified enough to talk about this stuff?

Sure, I’m married… but I’m not a marriage counsellor or a therapist.

The truth is: I’m not “qualified”. I’m just a guy that has worked through some pretty difficult stuff.

Before my marriage to Renée, I was engaged to another woman.

(Yeah, I bet you weren’t expecting that!)

The whole thing fell apart 2 months before the wedding when she came home, dropped the ring on the table and said.

“I can’t do this anymore”

I thought to myself, “How am I so good at business… but so freakin’ BAD at relationships?”

Something had to change.

Me.

I’ll give you more backstory in today’s video, but these are the 5 tips that I SWEAR by, and that helps make my marriage to Renée the most fulfilling part of my life.

I was never naturally gifted at anything.

I was the ADHD kid at school that always got in trouble, and no-one was expecting that I would succeed.

My parents divorced when I was a teenager...

Despite feeling like the odds were stacked against me… I decided I was going to become a great partner, a great husband and a great father.

No-one was going to stop me… ESPECIALLY not my own damn self.

If I became good at business by seeking advice, finding mentors, feeding my brain with books, and always finding ways to improve myself -- then it was time to do the same for relationships.

An epic marriage does NOT happen by chance.

You work for it.

It’s 100% worthwhile, and this video is how I’ve learned to be the best I can.

I’d love to know if these 5 tips resonate with you.

Drop me a comment on the video and let me know.

What if there was a
single number you could measure… one number that you focus all of your attention on...

And it would make your business rain revenue like never before?

Well thanks to Sean Ellis, founder of GrowthHackers, I believe I found one

I call it the North Star Metric.

See, after raising $1.6M in funding for my business Clarity.fm...

I began drowning in an ocean of numbers.

I lived in spreadsheets, followed every metric, and kept my finger on the pulse for every shifting digit across the entire company.

We had a good SaaS product. Great tech and a great team.

But I couldn’t find a way to crank up our profits!

I phoned Sean Ellis, frustrated because I couldn’t find the right foothold for growth.

You’ve got to find your North Star Metric, he told me.

I had formulas crunching every damn metric you could think of in my spreadsheets…

But a North Star Metric? This one was new.

I called a meeting with my team, and we went straight back to the whiteboard, to decide what would become our North Star Metric.

All of our teams - from support to development, to marketing, to sales - would prioritize their goals around it.

One number.

To today, I still thank Sean Ellis for opening my eyes to our North Star Metric… Because shortly after that, business TOOK OFF.

Like… KA-BOOM.

Now I’d like to pay it forward in today’s video.

This, my friends, is how you find and calculate your own North Star Metric… and why it’s the one number that’ll save your business every time.

A North Star Metric is not like other metrics you measure... It’s unique to YOUR business.

To prove this point, in this video I’ll share with you the individual North Star Metrics for:

- Airbnb

- Facebook

- Quora

- Slate

- Salesforce

- Adobe

It’s only 9 minutes. Play the video here, and let me know in the comments:

What are you going to make your north star metric?

I grew up an introvert.

Hunched over behind a computer in the late 90s, writing lines of code, hoping I never had to talk to anybody.

If you would have told me that one-day people would pay me $10,000+ to give a keynote presentation to an audience of hundreds

I would have laughed my ass off and called you an offensive word.

...Then I would have vomited.

Right on the floor.

Public speaking TERRIFIED the absolute %^&* out of me!

The thought of speaking to an audience made my stomach churn to the point of making me sick.

But with time, I learned the value of pushing myself outside of my comfort zone.

That it was possible to overcome fear.

And that out of the ashes of my terror, I could find confidence.

So going back 10+ years, I began to challenge myself to face my fear and learn public speaking. It’s been a long, difficult journey, but damn it’s been rewarding.

From a fumbling, nervous wreck to a confident speaker, I now want to share with you the greatest lessons I’ve learnt.

Here are 5 tips for beginners to improve public speaking... FAST!

“Oh he’s a natural”, they say.

Nope. I did my reps at the microphone, worked that public speaking muscle and practiced.

Now I consider public speaking my art form.

It’s my side business, a hobby that pays for me to fly around the world, meet amazing people and bring home a 5-digit paycheck.

If you’re a beginner… if you’re afraid of public speaking like I was…

Then I hope this video shows you that you can learn to speak confidently, to be entertaining and to provide massive value in a 1-to-many format.

Hopefully, you’ll find it as rewarding as I have.

Drop me a comment if you found it helpful, I love hearing from you.

Let me demystify this complex, confusing strategy they call:

Startup Funding Rounds.

Yeah, you’ve heard the words thrown around before.

“We’re raising our series B”, and “I’m looking for a pre-seed angel investor” or “We’re gearing up for an IPO”...

They may as well be talking another language, right?

Except that somewhere between those phrases, letters and acronyms is a reliable, rock-solid funding strategy that is PROVEN to work again and again.

It has turned founders into billionaires…

Put CEOs on the cover of Entrepreneur magazine…

And transformed back-of-napkin ideas into living breathing companies.

So let’s cut to the bone and spell out the sequential funding rounds in PLAIN ENGLISH.

Including:

- What each funding round means

- How much money you can expect from each round

- Who provides that money

- How to tell which round a business needs next

- Who leads a company through each round

- Why the rounds even exist in the first place!

If there’s a part of you that feels intimidated because you don’t yet understand all the “CEO talk” (yes, I’m using air quotes here), then don’t worry.

I didn’t either.

Now I could write a dictionary on “corporate jargon” 3-houses-thick and I would never even recommend anyone reads it.

But in those early days, I was beating down doors to find someone - anyone - that could spell out the basics when I was trying to start my first business.

By the end of this video, startup funding rounds will finally make sense.

Drop me a comment if you’re still not sure about anything.

I’d love to hear from you.

2020 sucked.

Not only for businesses… but for families, communities and economies around the world.

Working closely with SaaS founders means I’ve heard the pains, seen the panic and talked through the new reality of Covid 19 for many struggling startups.

Some businesses have a model that lets them bend rather than break.

Others… aren’t so fortunate.

I spoke with a business owner recently whose brick-and-mortar company was destroyed by Covid 19, losing 70% of business overnight.

But here’s the thing…

It’s not the pandemic that made entrepreneurship difficult.

It was ALWAYS hard, from the start.

That’s just how the Entrepreneurial Roller Coaster goes. You’ll experience the greatest highs followed by crushing lows.

So how do you DEAL with that?

How do you survive without quitting or… just falling to pieces?

I’ve been there enough times to have formed a system of thinking that will reignite and reinvigorate you even when the world is cruel and the odds seem stacked against you.

Here it is.

In this video, I’m going to share a high-level set of tactics that will work to:

- Give you hope when your business collapses
- Help you break through unexpected barriers
- Re-define your business goals
- Remain grateful in the face of disappointment
- Keep you motivated despite entrepreneurial challenges

This video includes 5 key questions to ask yourself today.

Wrong questions always lead to the wrong answers… But these 5 questions are how you can realign your thinking with something positive and actionable.

Here’s to 2021, the year that you can come back stronger than your competition and conquer your market landscape.

Don’t forget to drop me a comment with how you’re going to reframe the next year for your business.

I didn’t want to shoot this video.

Honestly, I didn’t even think it was necessary.

I assumed that all scaling SaaS founders must be doing accrual accounting, right?

But I soon discovered about 15% of those that I coach were using cash accounting, and they weren’t clear on the difference between deferred revenue vs accrued revenue.

...or why it matters.

Don’t worry, I’m not pointing fingers.

Over the years, I made almost every business mistake there is, so there’s no shame or judgement here.

But today I want to sell you on what accrual accounting is, WHY your accountant should be doing it...

And how it will set up your SaaS company for success.

In this video, I’m going to give you the perspective of an entrepreneur, a CEO, or a founder… NOT an accountant. You’ll learn:

- Why lots of SaaS founders start with cash accounting

- Deferred revenue vs. accrued revenue

- How to move to accrual accounting

- Why it will make you financially rock-solid

- How it can save you from overpaying taxes

- What bookkeeping software will do it for you

“But Dan, I pay an accountant so I don’t have to think about this stuff.”

So do I.

For every company I’ve ever started, I had accountants… and I’ve learned more about accounting than I ever wanted or planned to.

But you need to know that your business isn’t a leaky bucket of profits and that you’re optimized for scalable growth. That means knowing some high-level accounting principles.

It’s like eating vegetables. They might not be as tasty as chocolate, but trust me - it’s good for you.

If you want to start a new SaaS business in 2021
without tearing your hair out, my advice is:

Find a co-founder.

You shouldn’t have to do it all on your own… and it’s better that you don’t.

Finding the right co-founder means having someone who will work just as hard as you, can do the things you can’t, and gives your business a fighting chance in the market.

If you’re a non-technical founder, that could mean finding someone technical.

You grow the business, they build the product.

Or if you are a technical founder, then it means finding someone that can help you assemble a world-class team and market your product effortlessly while you write the code.

But picking the wrong co-founder spells D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R.

You end up losing a big slice of the most valuable asset in your business:

Equity.

Don’t ever, EVER, EVER give equity to the wrong co-founder.

So how do you find the right co-founder? How do you track them down and get them interested? How do you negotiate a fair equity split?

I’ve got you covered.

This week’s video is the 5-steps to finding the perfect co-founder for your startup.

We’re going to break this down logically and uncover:

- What to look for in a co-founder

- Where to find a technical co-founder

- How to know they are right for you

- What to say on your first introduction

- How to discuss equity

- The safest way to split equity fairly

Every SaaS company I’ve launched has been with co-founders. I even launched Spheric with a co-founding team of 4.

Could I have launched my businesses entirely on my own? Maybe.

But growth would have been slower, I’d have torn my hair out, and my family life would have suffered.

I like working with people… and my businesses are better for it.

Yours can be too. Check out the video here and drop me a comment if you have any questions.

How are angel investors different from venture capitalists?

Both invest in businesses. Both can write you big checks. Both have the power to help your business growth with a cash injection you otherwise would never get.

Are they the same?

Heck no.

I found this out the hard way...

When I was raising money for my 4th company Flowtown, I really didn’t know enough about investors.

I got some pretty weird looks when they read my terms sheets.

I didn’t understand their expectations. And all I had to go on were stories from colleagues, and a head full of wrong assumptions about what investors are looking for.

I started on the wrong foot. But eventually, I learned how to do it right...

So, when it was time to raise funds for my next business, Clarity.fm, I knew what the investors were looking for.

And I nailed it.

I closed $1.6M in funding…

...in 3 days!

It pays to know who you’re talking to and what they want. Trust me.

So I want to clear the air so you know the difference and you don’t raise money from the wrong people with the wrong expectations.

That’s what this week’s video is all about.

In this video, you’ll discover the difference between angel investors and venture capitalists down to 5 specific criteria:

- Source of money

- Investment thesis

- Pitching style

- Check size

- Investment filter

By the way, I’m also an investor myself, having invested in 40+ companies.

But I am an angel investor, and not a venture capitalist.

Hit play on the video and let’s go over the differences.

In 2009, my mentor Dharmesh Shah (co-founder of Hubspot) sat in my office in San Francisco and casually dropped an acronym I hadn’t heard.

“We want to increase our ARPU, he said.

I smiled and nodded… but the blank stare on my face was a giveaway.

I was clueless.

When someone as abundantly successful as the co-founder of a company now valued at over $14B (Yes, B for BILLION) mentions what his company is trying to do…

You take notes.

Since that day, ARPU has become one of my key SaaS growth metrics that I insist on calculating with my clients.

Then, once you know it… you’ve got to grow it!

So in today’s video, I’m going to explain what ARPU is, how you track it and how to improve it.

Watch it below. Your profit margins will thank you.

In this video, once we cover the basics of what ARPU is, I’ll share with you:

- The difference between ARPU and ARPA

- The 2-minute formula for calculating it

- How to know good from bad ARPU numbers

- Projections depending on business size

- Why ARPU can help smash your SaaS growth ceiling

- Strategies to improve ARPU

You already know I’m pumped about SaaS metrics.

I don’t follow sports.

I follow numbers and work with SaaS founders like you to get true visibility about what is and is not working in a tech business… and then how to DO something about it.

You don’t have to love it as much as I do.

But you’ve got to know what these metrics mean.

Hit play on the video and let’s get us both on the same page, yeah?
